5 questions to ask your pharmacist before starting a new medicine
When collecting a new medicine, many people only read the label on the pack. But your pharmacist is there to answer questions, and two minutes of conversation can prevent a mistake.
1. How and when do I take it?
Ask how many times a day, whether to take it before or after food, and whether there is a preferred time of day.
2. What if I miss a dose?
The answer differs from one medicine to another, so ask specifically rather than guessing.
3. Does it interact with my other medicines?
Tell the pharmacist everything you take, including supplements, herbal products and over-the-counter medicines, and ask whether any food or drink should be avoided.
4. Which side effects should I watch for?
Ask about the common expected effects, and about the signs that mean you should contact your doctor.
5. How do I store it and for how long do I take it?
Some medicines need refrigeration, and some have a short shelf life once opened. Also ask about the full length of treatment.
Medicine information at hand
The drug library in the Dawaii app shows information about medicines, their uses and interactions. It is a supporting reference and does not replace asking your pharmacist or doctor about your own case.
